Fabric Drama

Since I statrted sewing I have had no luck with fabric. See dying disaster 101.

So this project (do not tell my husband) both fabrics will have been purchased twice. The silk and the net overlay.

First I bought the net. White cotton net, with the intent to dye it black. True black or white cotton bobbinet was simply too expensive, at 7 yards at $30 a yard. I settled for white cotton mosquito netting that I would dye. $5 a yard.

Learning from my previous fiasco I cut int fabric into shorter and bought a tub so I could dye on the stove. Used basic Rit dye, did 2 baths. It still wasn't black enough, though it did come out a lovely dark, creepy grey that I may have use for. Nor was I crazy about the coarseness, not for the high end gown I am trying to replicate.

Looking around online on a lark, I found black silk net for $35 a yard, but 59 inches wide. This means I can run it length wise, cutting my fabric need to less than 4 yards. Doable!

In the meantime I bought burgundy silk satin from Pure Silks. Still haven't received, but I realized I had not received a confirmation email other than PayPal. I figured there was no way they could get it to me in time, so I bought backup fabric at Stonemountain and Daughter yesterday. Pricier and not quite the color I had in mind but wider, so I could get by with less.

Got an email first thing this morning, including follow up, profusely apologizing for their mistake and offering to ship it to arrive my Friday.

Yeah. Don't tell hubby about this fabric bing.
