I've have to take a mini-break from my Gala gown and work on my daughter's baptism gown. Long story short, my initial plans for a baby baptism gown went to the wayside while life interfered. Now it's a dress for a 5 year old!
When she was a wee babe I made up this front panel for her gown. I don't remember the yards of lace, but it was all lot. Tiny tiny zig zag stitches. Being careful to to put too much tension on the lace, as it causes uneven feeding. For the parts I missed I just re-zig zaged. I used 2 types of lace for consistency in the design.
After pulling the panel (which fits about perfectly, collar bone to floor) out of deep freeze, what next?
Fabric!
The hands down most expensive fabric I have ever worked with, by a good $20 a yard. But it is BEAUTIFULLY made. Not a thread loose, nor raw edge exposed. Every other eyelet lace I have seen looks like crap compared to this.
I picked lace trim to coordinate with the daisy theme. Simple beading to break up the center front panel a bit, and some daisy insertion to tie off the edge.
More lace. Needs more lace. A ruffle. From the stash. You can see where I've inserted and trimmed down the beading. More tiny zig zag sitches. And entredeux? It has a purpose. It makes inserting lace by hand waaaaaaay easier. I did most of this by machine, but in a few places I needed to tidy up, so I did it by hand. Yay entredeux for making easy sitches that don't bunch!
I picked a simple pattern as the basis for the gown. I'd initially planned on doing a boat or a slash neckline, only to discover the scallops would climb half way up her neck. And a wiggly 5 year old is not going to cooperate with the multitude of fittings to figure out how to change that. So lower neckline it is.
I may or may not have been binging on Mr Selfridge when I designed the bodice front. No teens influence at all, right?
The lace has been gently shaped with a series of tiny darts to curve it away from neck opening. The back is similar, only without the shaping and an eyelet lace panel in the back.
Next update will be the skirt and overs kirt. I have impressed myself with the over skirt. One of those, oooooh awesome, look what the pattern is doing when I shape it moments!
