Gala Gown Update

I had to clean out my sewing room a couple weeks ago and discovered I no longer hated my Gala gown. It had been on my sewing table since July, unloved. I was able to gaze upon those 50 yards of pleats without cringing in memory of the effort.

I stated back up by running prick stitches along the cotton flannel bias tape I'd put in the hem. It was wiggly in a couple spots so it couldn't hurt. I'd left the basting in place for too long though, so the stitches show a bit. Hopefully they relax, but the outside marks are covered in what else, ruffle.

And yes, I've put a patch over the gap. Silk was being squirly, as charmeuse is apt to do. But you can see the love soft curve the flannel gives where the hem turns over.

I've been sick this week (boo flu!) but not so horrible that 4 days stuck in bed or on the couch couldn't be sort of useful. Seam finishing on this gown was challenging - all the straight seams of a skirt but the curves of a bodice. A challenge of the princess cut I'd not realized was there.

I'd zig zagged all the ginormous pattern pieces after flat lining. It worked ok, but raw edges poked through and showed when I ironed. Had to put a piece of flannel between the seam allowance and the gown to be able to iron. So I wasn't happy.

Being sick, and down for a while, I decided I needed a simple project I could do while sick and on the couch.

Seam ripper + Lace Hem Tape = Pretty seams.

I'd say I'm about 1/3rd the way done. I was sloooooooow while I was still pretty sick, but sped up as I figured it out and got better. A running stitch is all that is needed, with careful tape placement. Faster than whipping, faster than grading and turning under.

And my gown will have one of those just for me details I love to add to my gowns. Trim and lace in spots the rest of us can't see. If you can't spoil yourself on a grand ball gown, when can you?
