1898 Worth Gown, Post 1

My version of an 1898 Worth gown at the Met. A stash project. Exceptions are the linings, buckles, and long boning at the center back lacing. Silk, velvet, duchess satin, silk guaze, lace, all stash.

And obligatory selfie, before my curls migrated down my forehead. My hair! My actual hair! Not a lick of fake stuff! The necklace is a Victorian original, the hair piece is from Micheal's. Buckles on the shoulders date from the 1930's. Was hoping for silver, but there were so close to the original in shape gold it was.

Mid 1890's hair is boring. Basically a fancy bun/french twist, with curls or frizzing in the front. No Gibson Girl buffant, or 1870's mop of a high chigon. Was planning on frizzing the front curls, but when they turned out so perfect I decided to keep them as is. Would have done more if I realized how  well they would have stayed.

Easily the most technically complicated thing I've ever made. This required matching patterns, getting the sleeves to set right, the fold back on the back lapels, the drape of the lace, the tiny tiny ruffles, the front folds, the complicated back closures.

More to come.
