I am making my own variation of this gown from the Met
1898, though the skirt cut makes me think earlier.
Buuuuuuuuut what about those pleats in the sleeves?
How the heck to I replicate that? Too tight for a pleater board, no way could you do it by hand.
I propose a series of experiments. I have quite a bit of a full bolt of silk gauze left. Enough to experiment without feeling wasteful. So. Here goes.
Conditions: Silk will be cut into 16 inch wide strips, just wide enough to fasten on a rimless cookie sheet. Silk will be gathered along the length as tightly as possible, and tied to the cookie sheet for tension. Bound to keep neat for setting.
Variables:
Oven temperature
Starch & Vinegar
Temperature: Vary oven use between ironing, 100 and 200 deg. 3 trails.
Starch & Vinegar: Combinations of none, spray starch, vinegar and both. 4 trials
That means 12 tests. 3 batches of 4 samples.
If this works, which I believe it will, I will have pleats to match the example.

Hah I love your precise scientific approach. Can't wait to see how it works out!
